T.M. Krishna in conversation with Anuradha Ananth

30 May

T M Krishna

I hastily put the hot, cheese-centered dynabite back onto the plate when TM Krishna walks into Chamier’s Eco café. He looks like he’s easily lost about 15 kgs and his closely cropped hair and new beard gives him an almost rakish look. When he settles down with a garden trio juice, he confides that he woke up one day and didn’t like the way he looked. So he went off sugar, cut down his intake of rice and voila! 15kgs fell off his person in 6 months.

“So do you think this new level of fitness makes a difference to your singing?” I ask. “It definitely does. Singing seems like a very passive activity. But its not”, he says emphatically. Continue reading

An interview with Radhika Menon of Tulika Books

Radhika Menon

Radhika Menon began Tulika Books in 1996, and the imprint has gone on to become a respected name in publishing children’s literature, a pioneering publishing house that has a multi-lingual presence in English and Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati and Bangla. Here are some insights from a chat with her:

Would you say that reading habits have changed since you first began bringing out children’s books in 1996?
I would describe the change not so much in reading habits, as in children’s publishing itself. In the last few years, there has been a buzz about Indian children’s books. We have Children’s Books Festivals and there is a large pool of talent of illustrators, writers and graphic artists working to make children’s books better. It is now an active and vibrant space. What is it about French Food that sets it apart? The SAUCES, of course.

When one thinks of continental or European food one of the key ingredients is a sauce. “Sauce” is a French word that means “a relish to make our food more appetizing”, though its origin lies in the Latin from the word ‘salsus’ meaning salted. Continue reading

If it’s food, there’s more to it than meets the eye. Food as it is today is not just for the stomach but increasingly becoming a fashion statement. The pundits of high street may call it ‘haute cuisine’ but every thing on the plate is not high in the literal sense. Where did this journey start from? It is rather difficult to pin down the exact date. Continue reading

Lakshmi Vishwanathan is a well known dancer and writer. She has authored several books, the most recent being the best seller : “Women of Pride – the Devadasi Heritage”.

From the beginning of Time, mankind (and womankind) has been hair-obsessed. Fashion, style and other statements were made long before “Vogue” came into the picture. Picture this: Adam and Eve were happily romping around when suddenly they came across a glistening pond of water. They bent over to examine it, saw their faces and exclaimed : “God! How ugly!” They quickly ran their hands through their dishevelled hair, bringing some order to it, looked at each other and fell in love! The rest is of course history!. Continue reading
